- /rənjuəbəl ˈrisɔs/ (say ruhnyoohuhbuhl 'reesaws)
a natural resource which is not finite but can be renewed, such as the sun, wind, or biomass. Compare non-renewable resource.
Renewable resources include natural materials such as forests and the products of agriculture, which are produced through photosynthesis, and fisheries, all of which can be regrown or regenerated at a rate greater than or equal to the rate at which they are used. If carefully managed, such resources can be sustained forever. Renewable resources also include water, which is recycled by nature, wind, the sun, and the oceans, all of which can be used to produce renewable energy. See also solar energy; ocean energy; wind energy.
